When you look at the All-State teams from the spring sports season, you’ll see a lot of names from Riverton High School. That happens when you have a state champion softball team, a baseball team that made another deep postseason run and strong performances from other teams this past spring.
Here’s a rundown of the outstanding performances Riverton had in the latter part of the 2023–24 school year.
Softball
The Riverton softball team had a memorable season, capturing the Class 6A crown. Riverton posted a 27-5 record and was a perfect 10-0 in a challenging Region 2. In the state tournament, the Silverwolves were at their best. They won their first five games to march to the finals. After a loss to Riverton in the two-loss playoffs, Riverton won back-to-back games over Bingham to earn the championship.
Many players were key factors in the bringing home the trophy, and many made All-State.
Senior centerfielder Tessa Hogue was named Playoff MVP in 6A. Hogue was also a First-Team All-State Honoree after hitting .527 and collecting 38 stollen bases. She hit two home runs, four triples and four doubles while recording 20 RBI. She was even better in the postseason when it mattered most, batting .667 in the lead-off position, scoring 16 runs and stealing 10 bases.
“She also had standout plays in center field, with multiple diving catches, balls caught on the fence and more,” head coach Whitley Haimin said. “She killed it.”
Sophomore first baseman/third baseman Maggie Hamblin also made the First Team, as did sophomore pitcher Peyton Sanchez. Hamblin had a .506 batting average, hit 13 home runs and seven triples, and had 50 RBI. Sanchez impressed with a 3.3 ERA and a .479 batting average. Yet another Silverwolves player made the First Team, Lily Heitz, a senior pitcher/second baseman. She hit 11 home runs, collected 56 RBI and hit .465 on the year.
Second-Team All-State honorees were Braylee Shields and Brooke Tacke. Shields, a senior right fielder, drove in 32 runs this past season and hit three home runs and six doubles. Tacke, a junior catcher, had eight home runs and eight doubles.
Two more players, junior left fielder Camryn O’Farrell, and Baylee Martinez, a junior third baseman, were Honorable Mention. O’Farrell had 27 RBI and seven doubles on the year, while Martinez contributed five home runs, one triple, 11 doubles and 26 RBI.
Baseball
Success is no stranger for the Riverton baseball team, and this season was no different. The Silverwolves went 22-9 on the year and won Region 2 with a 12-3 record. The team was well-represented with All-State recognition too.
Three players made First-Team All-State: Zach Edwards, Cooper Hansen and Kaden Allred. Edwards, a senior pitcher/shortstop batted .442 and stole 17 bases. He also scored 42 runs and had 27 RBI. Hansen a senior pitcher, struck out 52 batters, had a 9-2 record on the mound and had an earned run average of 2.74.
