Costco Wholesale submitted a formal commercial site plan application for a proposed location in Riverton back in June. The proposed location is at the northeast corner of 13200 South and Mountain View Corridor, just north of Mountain View Village. The application comes after months of coordination between Costco, Riverton City officials, and Suburban Land Reserve who currently owns the application site.

“We have been actively working with Costco for many months and are pleased to see them moving forward,” said Mayor Trent Staggs. “This development will benefit the citizens of Riverton for years into the future, not just for the great products and services Costco provides, but due to the sales tax revenue that will be generated. Grateful for all the hard work that has been put in by many people over several months to make this happen. Expanding economic development has been a huge focus of mine and our council for the past few years. Increasing commercial activity in Riverton not only provides more opportunities to frequent stores in our city for our residents, but also contributes in keeping our taxes and fees low by the sales tax dollars that also come as a result. Thanks to our staff, the Costco team, Suburban Land Reserve, Dan McCay and others.”

The Costco warehouse is proposed to be approximately 160,000 square feet in size. In addition to the warehouse, the 19.19-acre property will include a Costco gas station and more than 800 parking stalls. The application includes plans to create a right-in, right-out connection with Mountain View Corridor. This intends to provide better access to the location beyond the primary access from Eagles Flight Road (4570 West).

When completed, it is anticipated the Riverton Costco will attract tens of thousands of customers from Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, western South Jordan and others nearby creating a new stream of income for the city of Riverton.

Some residents joked on social media regarding the announcement, “How many years are they tax exempt?” To which Staggs replied, “None.”

Time lines for the construction and grand opening of the Costco location is not yet known. The next step in the process will be a formal review and approval of the site by Riverton City Planning Commission Officials.
